Connect NowThis FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) answers common Medicare-related questions for retirees who continue to have health benefits from other sources.
I am retired and have health insurance from my previous employer. Do I still need Medicare?
Yes, it is advisable since usually Medicare pays first and retiree insurance second.
If you're retired and are getting health insurance from your previous employer, it may have a different set of rules which may not work the same way as Medicare. Make sure you understand your coverage.
I am retired and have health insurance coverage from a family member’s current/past employer. Do I still need to enroll in Medicare?
The same rules apply as if you had similar coverage from your own current/past employer. Refer above for more details.
I have retiree health insurance coverage, but it does not include prescription drugs. Can I just enroll in Medicare Part D?
Yes. You can just enroll in Part D (Prescription Drugs). However, make sure your retiree coverage does qualify as equivalent alternate coverage.
My past employer pays me a fixed sum every month for retiree health insurance. Do I need to turn it over to Medicare?
You need not turn in the fixed sum to Medicare. People in this situation typically use the money to pay for their Medicare expenses.
I have access to special custom-made retiree insurance plan(s) from a past employer. Should I enroll into those or go for publicly available Medicare plans?
It is usually a good idea to take whatever coverage is offered by your current/past employer and fill in any gaps on your own by enrolling into appropriate plans.
However, always compare what the special custom-made plans are offering, including coverage and costs, with what is available in the market for Medicare. Pick the option that makes the most sense.
Keep in mind that if the retiree insurance plan(s) are offered as Medicare Advantage (MA) plans and you enroll into them, you may not be able to also enroll into Medicare Supplement plans at the same time.
