This FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) answers common questions about what to do with Medicare if you continue working after turning 65.
I plan to keep working after turning 65, will I still be eligible for Medicare?
Yes, you will be eligible though you may decide to defer your enrollment. Ensure you understand your existing coverage (through an employer, for example), before deciding on whether and which plans to enroll in under Medicare.
How will working beyond 65 impact my Medicare coverage, enrollment and costs?
You may not need to get hospital, doctor or drug coverage through Medicare if you already have these covered through a group health insurance plan. Ask your group plan administrator.
Ensure you understand your existing coverage before deciding on which plans to enroll in under Medicare.
I will be self-employed after turning 65. Does this change anything as far as Medicare goes?
As a self-employed individual, you will have to pay both the employer and employee portions of FICA taxes (Social security and Medicare). All other Medicare coverage and enrollment periods remain the same for the self-employed or employed.
What happens when I finally stop working and am beyond 65?
You need not enroll in Medicare on turning 65 if you have other equivalent coverage. Once that coverage ends, you will be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for enrolling into Medicare.
Ensure that your coverage was equivalent, otherwise you might have to pay late enrollment penalties, which can be substantial and last a lifetime.
