Phone Scams

There are scamsters on the prowl, and you have to be extra careful while giving out information about yourself to people who either do not reveal their identity or you are not sure about their identity.

It may be advisable to have a caller ID and maybe even go a step further by not revealing anything if the person at the other end asks for your credit or debit card details or your Medicare Plan. Medicare does not call you for your payment or billing information, so anyone asking for such information is suspect.

You need to be on guard regarding unsolicited calls. If you have any doubts whatsoever, disconnect the call and call up Medicare directly at 1-800-633-4227 (TTY 1-877-486-2048).

You may be targeted anytime of the year, though scams increase during the Annual Election Period from October 15th to December 7th. This is a vulnerable period. Seek Medicare advice from trusted individuals or firms.

You can also report fraud (or suspected fraud) to StopMedicareFraud.gov.
